Kenya, Senegal keep winning streak at Africa championships

Xinhua, June 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Senegal and host Kenya maintained their unbeaten run in the Women's African Nations Championship which will select teams to the volleyball World Cup in Japan in September.

Kenya dismissed Algeria in straight 3-0 sets of 25-20, 25-22, 25-19, while Senegal surprised many when they launched a comeback to edge out Tunisia 3-2 (14-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-12) in the ongoing tournament in Nairobi late on Sunday.

Now Dark horse Senegal lead Pool B, with a win-loss ratio of 2-0, and has four points like Cameroon who took over Morocco 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-20).

Botswana fought aggressively to overcome the struggling Mauritian team 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15) to come second to Kenya of Pool A.

Kenya coach David Lung'aho did not make any changes to his starting lineup from the one in the opener beating Mauritius last Friday.

"It is important to keep our feet on the ground and focus on the next match," said Lung'aho, "We missed the World Championships last year at the expense of Tunisia and we are keen to win this tourney to qualify for the World Cup in Japan."

The top two teams from the eight competing here will qualify for the World Cup, where another four slots will be up for grabs for the semifinalist for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Endi
