Housing sales rise in Spain during April

Xinhua, June 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Sales of homes in Spain rose by 1.9 percent in April 2015 when compared with the same month a year ago, according to figures published on Monday by the General Council of Notaries.

A total of 30,758 transactions took place during the month with house prices continuing to fall.

The average cost of a home in Spain in April was 1,188 euros (around 1,330 U.S. dollars) per square meter, which is 3.9 percent lower than in April 2014.

However, the rise in house sales was extremely uneven and only affected one sector of the housing market: that for second hand homes.

There was a 5.9-percent rise in the sale of second hand homes, while in contrast, the sale of new homes decreased by 27.3 percent, which is not good news for Spain's construction industry as it looks to climb out of the crisis.

The rise in housing sales was reflected in an increase in the number of mortgages granted to prospective homeowners with 23,470 granted during the month. This represents a 1.9- percent increase, or 1.4 percent when seasonal factors are taken into consideration.

The average value of a mortgage was 139,314 euros, 4.7 percent higher than in April 2014. (1 euro = 1.12 U.S. dollars) Endit
