Jordan concerned over UNRWA's financial crisis

Xinhua, June 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Jordan said on Monday that it is deeply concerned over a financial crisis a UN agency that helps the Palestinians is going through, urging the international community to offer more support, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

A deepening gap between the financial needs of the United Nations Relief and Works Organization (UNRWA) and support by the donor countries is a major challenge, Jordan's Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani said at a meeting of the agency's consultative committee.

Jordan is home to the largest number of Palestinian refugees, Momani said.

He added that tension and stability will continue in the Middle East unless a permanent and just solution to the Palestinian cause was reached.

Jordan, he said, is directly interested in resuming peace talks leading to the creation of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He stressed that Jordan will continue to take measures to protect the holy sites in east Jerusalem.

Jordan oversees the Islamic and Christian holy sites in East Jerusalem, which Palestinians envisage as the capital of their future state. Endit
