Some 400 competitors representing six teams from three continents gathered here Saturday to participate in the Chan Hun International TaeKwondo Federation (CHITF)'s General Choi Legacy World Cup Canada to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the popular Asian martial art.
CHITF Founding President Senior Grandmaster Phap Ken Lu, Black Belt 9th dan, officiated the opening ceremony which was attended by about 1000 audiences around the world.
During the ceremony, three people from different backgrounds were officially recognized for their significant contributions to the promotion of taekwondo and were awarded the Honorary Black Belt 4th dan and 2nd dan.
Chan Hun ITF was founded and registered in Canada in 2013 by Senior Grandmaster Lu. It has since grown in strides, with official chapters in eight of Canada's 10 provinces and three territories. Internationally, CHITF has 40 national members in five continents.
Taekwondo was founded by the late South Korean Army general and diplomat in 1955. Apart from the Vienna, Austria-based International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) and the Seoul, South Korea-headquartered World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), CHITF is the third international Taekwondo federation with world-wide affiliated clubs in the world today.
For the past 12 months, Senior Grandmaster Lu has travelled extensively around the world, setting up new national chapters and holding important training courses for coaches, conducting exams and granting degrees to outstanding practitioners. He was also given warm receptions by senior government officials in China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Nepal, Mexico, Argentina and Moldova.
Senior Grandmaster Lu announced on Saturday that CHITF will stage a series of international championships in the second half of 2015 and in 2016, including the 2016 International Championship in Canada and European Championship in Moldova.
One of the eight hand-picked international disciples of the legendary founder of Taekwondo, the late General Choi Hong Hi since 1985, Senior Grandmaster Lu was one of the four disciples who were with the General shortly before he passed away in 2002 in South Korea. He and his wife, Grandmaster Peggy Seely both received extensive training personally conducted by the General in both the spirit and the techniques of Taekwondo. Endi
