UN calls for quality education for children to fight against child labor

Xinhua, June 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Marking the World Day Against Child Labor, the United Nations on Friday called on the international community to ensure quality education for children in a bid to fight against child employment.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labor in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labor and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it.

According to the latest UN statistics, an estimated 215 million children around the world work for survival, many full-time and more than half in conditions deemed hazardous to their health, keeping them out of school.

In a message for the day, ILO Director-General Guy Ryder said that a collective responsibility is to enable all children, girls and boys, to have access to education, particularly quality education.

A future without child labor calls for inclusive development policies integrating decent work for adults, social protection floors and sound education systems, he said.

In this regard, this year, the UN calls for global actions to ensure free, compulsory and quality education for all children at least to the minimum age for admission to employment and also appeals for policies that ensure access to quality education and investment in the teaching profession. Endite
