France invested "several hundred million euros" in its key tourism activity via a new investment fund aimed at further improving the sector's services and lure millions of potential holidaymakers, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius announced Thursday.
"We create an investment fund for tourism worth several hundred million euros to allow hotels managers who need financing to borrow," Fabius told the news channel BFMTV.
The French minister added the fresh investment would help France, the world's top tourism destination, to improve the quality of its services to attract more tourists.
According to Fabius, "tourism is a national treasure" offering 2 millions jobs and accounting for 7 percent of the country's national output.
France is one of the most visited countries in the world, receiving 83.7 million foreign tourists annually due to its wealthy history, abundant cultural and natural heritages.
Officials aim to attract 100 million visitors annually by 2020. Endit
