Over 190,000 people were affected by floods in the northeast Indian state of Assam and 550 villages were partially or completely submerged by water, said officials Wednesday.
Meanwhile, crops in more than 8,200 hectares in the Bramhaputra valley in the state were also destroyed, inflicting heavy losses on local farmers, said Assam State Disaster Management Authority.
The Brahmaputra river, the third largest river in India, is flowing above the danger mark at several districts, in particular Lakhimpur district, which has been worst-hit with 60,000 people affected.
Some roads, bridges and culverts were damaged while breaches were reported in embankments in a number of districts.
The government is arranging temporary shelters and providing affected villagers with food and medicines.
The flood came along with the monsoon season which started last weekend in India. Endi
