EU-CELAC summit kicks off in Brussels, centered on reinvigorating regional relationships

Xinhua, June 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

The second European Union (EU)-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit opened here on Wednesday with the theme of working for prosperous, cohesive, and sustainable societies.

The summit was co-chaired by the European Council and Ecuador, which holds the rotating presidency of CELAC until January, 2016.

The two-day summit, which brought together European, Latin American, and Caribbean leaders, is seeking to reinvigorate the EU-CELAC relationship around three main axes: strengthened political dialogue, completing and modernizing economic ties, and a new type and focus of cooperation.

Ahead of the summit, the EU announced 118 million euros (133 million U.S. dollars) of new funding for Latin America and the Caribbean to increase EU investment and business cooperation in the region.

The first EU-CELAC Summit took place in Santiago, Chile in January 2013 and focussed on trade collaboration and the promotion of investments of social and environmental quality. Endit
