Negotiation only solution to Israel-Palestine conflict: Serbian president

Xinhua, June 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Presidents of Serbia and Palestine Tomislav Nikolic and Mahmoud Abbas agreed here on Wednesday that the only way to overcome conflict between Palestine and Israel is to start talks between the two countries as soon as possible.

Abbas made an official visit to Serbia on Nikolic's invitation to open the Palestinian embassy here, and to talk about the obstacles impeding the start of negotiations between the two Middle Eastern nations. It is Abbas' second visit to the country in five years.

Abbas blamed the delay of negotiations on Israel which, according to him, built settlements on Palestinian soil. He said at the press conference that in order for the talks to start, Israel had to release Palestinian prisoners, and stop inhabiting its territories.

Abbas thanked Serbia for its political support in the General Assembly of the UN where Serbia was the only country of the region which voted to recognize Palestine as a non-member country in that international body.

Referring to the two conflicting countries, Nikolic said: "Those are two friendly countries to us, and we know from our own experience that many things can be achieved by negotiations," Nikolic said, encouraging the two to negotiate. Endit
