Pakistani PM approves 5 mln USD assistance for Rohingya Muslims

Xinhua, June 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved all the recommendations of the special committee to solve the plight of Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar including 5 million U.S. dollar assistance, a statement from the PM office said here on Tuesday.

The announcement was made after Islamic nations have expressed concerns over the treatment of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

Sharif would be writing a letter to the UN secretary general drawing his attention to the issue, said the statement.

Pakistani government had formed a high-level committee to explore ways on how to respond to the needs of the Rohingyas.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Senate passed a resolution condemning the persecution of the Rohingya Muslims and called for declaring June 12 a day of solidarity with the Rohingya Muslims.

The resolution said that Rohingya Muslims are being denied of their natural right of residing in a country where they have been living for centuries.

It called upon the government of Pakistan to immediately talk the matter with UN secretary general and request him to appoint his envoy for the Rohingya Muslims so that their lives and livelihood be protected and human rights safeguarded. Endi
