Indian security forces Tuesday killed 12 leftwing rebels in the central state of Jharkhand, said local media.

In an encounter with Naxalite rebels in the Palamau district of Jharkhand at wee hours Tuesday, security forces attacked two vehicles being used by the rebels in a forest area some 140 km from the state capital Ranchi, said Press Trust of India.

All the bodies of the rebels have been recovered, the report quoted Superintendent of Police Mayur Patel as saying.

Security forces got intelligence inputs that the rebels were moving in the area and rushed to the spot.

The rebels had ambushed a police vehicle in Dumka district of the state in April last year, killing eight persons, including six polling officials.

The Naxalite rebels are numbered at around 10,000 and active in about 10 states, mainly in poor rural areas. Endi
