Resignation of presidential aide new blow to Chilean president

The resignation of Chilean presidential aide Jorge Insunza dealt a new blow to the scandal-hit administration of Michelle Bachelet.
Insunza resigned just four weeks into the job following revelations that he owned a company that put out political reports for mining firms while he was president of the Chamber of Deputies' Mining Committee.
Chile's law does not bar legislators from having outside jobs, but the revelations became particularly ironic as Insunza was named in May as part of a cabinet overhaul designed to redress allegations of corruption.
Bachelet, who is in France for a visit, has accepted Insunza's resignation. Her approval ratings plummeted to record lows after her son was accused of influence peddling for personal enrichment.
Interior Minister Jorge Burgos, who is acting as vice president while Bachelet is out of the country, acknowledged Monday that Insunza's resignation complicated an already sensitive situation.
A replacement is to be announced once Bachelet returns this week. Endi
