Jordan launches mega solar power plant

Xinhua, June 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Jordan's Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Monday launched the construction work of a 170 million solar-run power plant located in southern part of the country.

"The government is keen on relying on renewable energy in Jordan, rich with sunshine year-round," the prime minister said at the launch of the construction plant.

The power plant will be finished in mid 2016 and is to start producing electricity in September of next year, he added.

The plant is owned by a group of Jordanian, Japanese and Qatari companies, he said.

The prime minister said the 52.5 megawatts power plant will create around 500 jobs, stressing that the plant will produce about 160 gigawatts annually.

Jordan imports about 97 percent of its energy needs annually at a total cost of 20 percent of the gross domestic product.

By 2018, there will be operational renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 1,800 megawatts in Jordan, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Endit
