Philippine capital to start building mass railway extension project

The Philippine government is set to start the construction of a 2.27-billion-peso (50.54 million U.S. dollars) railway extension project to service hundreds of thousands of passengers in the eastern part of Metro Manila, a senior government official said Monday.

Transportation and Communications Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said the groundbreaking ceremony for the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 2 East Extension Project will take place Tuesday.

"We are pleased to extend its scope to even more stakeholders in the eastern part of Metro Manila, many of whom go into the metropolis for work and school on a daily basis," he said.

The project, which will add 4.2 kilometers to the line up to Masinag in Antipolo City, will be operational by the third quarter of 2017. It is expected to cater to an additional 75,000 daily passengers living in densely populated areas of northern province of Rizal.

The government awarded the project to a local contractor. Endi
