Comedy film "Spy" tops North American box office

Starring comedy actress Melissa McCarthy, Fox's R-rated "Spy" debuted in first place this weekend in North America earning an estimated 30 million U.S. dollars.

Directed by writer-director Paul Feig, "Spy" is McCarthy's third box office gold as a lead actor, behind only "The Heat" and "Identity Thief." The film, featuring McCarthy as a desk-bound CIA analyst who becomes a field agent, received a solid "B+" rating on CinemaScore. Critics gave it a good 95 percent approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes.

The audience breakdown for the film skewed towards female moviegoers, at 60 percent. An estimated 65 percent of moviegoers were over the age of 25.

Disaster film "San Andreas" dropped to second place this weekend, with a 26.4 million dollars total in its second weekend of releasing. The Dwayne Johnson led 3D disaster film dropped 52 percent from last weekend. It has grossed 92.2 million dollars in the United States and Canada in its first 10 days.

Opened at 3,002 locations, "Insidious: Chapter 3" debuted in third place with 23 million dollars, a strong debut for the low- budget horror prequel. And another new released film -- HBO's " Entourage" -- made 10.4 million dollars over the weekend and has brought in a five-day total of 17.8 million dollars since opening Wednesday.

The remaining top 10 movies were "Mad Max: Fury Road" (8 million dollars), "Pitch Perfect 2" (7.7 million), "Tomorrowland" (7 million), "Avengers: Age Of Ultron" (6.2 million), "Aloha" (3.3 million) and "Poltergeist" (2.8 million). Endite
