Tanzania on Saturday commemorated the 50th anniversary of the official visit of Zhou Enlai, the first Premier of the People's Republic of China, to the United Republic of Tanzania in 1965, the first of its kind to an independent Tanzania.

Speaking at a commemoration ceremony held in Dar es Salaam, Abdallah Kigoda, the country 's Minister for Industry and Trade, said Tanzania will continue to commemorate and value the legacy of Zhou Enlai and his contribution to the development of the country.

The premier's visit strengthened the bilateral relations between China and Tanzania, Kigoda said, adding that an emphasis on the mutual bilateral relationship based on equality, respect and the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence was his great belief.

"Our duty now is to translate this political freedom to economic freedom and safeguard our independence," said the minister.

Premier Zhou Enlai's visit to Tanzania in 1965 wrote the historic chapter of Tanzania-China friendship with the founding father and outstanding national leader of Tanzania, President Julius Nyerere, said Miao Wei, Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology.

"This visit laid a solid foundation for China-Tanzania being all-weather good friends and good partners," said Miao who attended the ceremony on behalf of the Chinese government.

"China-Tanzania relationship is gaining new momentum with the passage of time. Now the time has arrived for the two countries to engage in all-around cooperation and speed up the process of industrialization," he said.

For the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Zhou Enlai's visit to Tanzania, a "Xinhua Gallery" photo exhibition opened on Saturday in Dar es Salaam with rare historic photos of Zhou's visit in 1965 being on show to the public.

On June 4, 1965, Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai paid an official visit to Tanzania at the invitation of Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere. The high level visit strengthened bilateral relations between China and Tanzania, setting the foundation for what has become an exemplary bilateral relationship between the two countries. Endi
