Family members of missing Singaporean students leave for Malaysia following quake

Xinhua, June 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Family members of missing Singaporean students and teachers in Malaysia's eastern Sabah state after an earthquake left for Mount Kinabalu on an Airforce C- 130 plane, Singapore's Ministry of Education (MOE) said on Saturday.

The ministry said a team comprising counselors and officials from the Singapore Police Force, Singapore Civil Defense Force and the Transport Ministry were also aboard the aircraft.

A group of 29 pupils and eight teachers from Tanjong Katong Primary School were in Malaysia's Sabah on an overseas learning journey. Eight students and two teachers were still missing after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit the Malaysian state on Friday.

Malaysian authorities said on Friday night that a 12-year-old Singaporean girl was killed at Mount Kinabalu when the earthquake struck Sabah. The Singapore authorities have yet to confirm the death.

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has updated three Facebook posts since Friday night, showing his concern about the missing students and teachers. He said the Singapore government was doing all they can to reach them, and his thoughts were with those affected by the quake, and their families. Endi
