UN pledges to support Vietnam to reduce waste, save natural resources

Xinhua, June 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

The United Nations (UN) is always willing to support Vietnam in efforts to reduce waste, save natural resources and lessen impacts on environment, said a UN official on Friday.

Louise Chamberlain, country director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Vietnam, made the remarks at a meeting held on Friday in northern Vietnam's Vinh Phuc province, some 55 km west of capital Hanoi, to mark World Environment Day which falls on June 5 annually.

According to Chamberlain, the UNDP calls on the community together to save the earth.

Living sustainably means doing more with better result but with less cost. This means economic development should not cause rapid deterioration of natural resources, said the UNDP official.

The UN environment program showed that, the earth's ecosystem is gradually moving towards degradation or transformation due to increasing population and economic development, reported Vietnam' s state-run news agency VNA on Friday.

Speaking at the meeting, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said his country's economic development is much based on exploitation of natural resources and large consumption of material and energy. Environmental pollution remains serious in some sectors while air pollution is being warned in several localities.

On World Environment Day, Hai urged Vietnamese citizens, organizations and companies to take simple and practical actions to contribute to saving environment. Endi
