China on Friday dismissed a statement by the U.S. Department of State on the political turbulence in 1989, urging the U.S. not to harm bilateral ties.
"The Chinese government has already had the final verdict on the political turbulence and relevant issues of the late 1980s. It is undeniable that China has achieved great economic and social development in the past more than 20 years," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei in a press release.
The U.S. on Wednesday called for an official account of the victims of the incident, and demanded that China protect human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Hong said the remarks were unprovoked accusations, which severely infringed upon China's internal affairs, attempted to interfere in China's judicial sovereignty, and violated the basic norms of international relations and the principles of three China-U.S. joint communiques.
"China is strongly dissatisfied with, and against, that," Hong said.
He urged the U.S. to abandon political prejudice and rectify the wrong doings to prevent obstructing and harming bilateral ties with China. Endi
