Kenya to market tourism products at Milan Expo

Xinhua, June 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Kenyan government will engage in a publicity blitz to showcase diverse tourism products to visitors at the ongoing Milan Expo in Italy, officials said on Thursday.

Phyllis Kandie, Cabinet Secretary for Commerce and Tourism, told reporters in Nairobi the government and tourism industry players have pitched tent at the Milan Expo to attract foreign visitors.

"Kenya is among 150 countries participating in the 2015 Milano Expo to showcase our tourist attraction sites. The Expo provides a platform to showcase Kenya as an investment destination," Kandie said.

The 2015 Milan Expo that commenced in May and ends in October has been attracting 18,000 visitors daily. Kandie revealed the month of June will be dedicated to tourism, and Kenya will seize the opportunity to showcase its scenic attractions to international visitors.

"Our presence at the Milan Expo comes at an opportune moment as the government seeks innovative ways to revive the tourism sector as it reels from many challenges," said Kandie.

Kenya's participation at the Milan Expo presents an opportunity to woo Italian tourists.

"Italy is among the resilient tourist source markets that we must retain and even grow further. Destinations such as Malindi and Watamu in the coastal region have been popular in the Italian market," Kandie said.

She revealed the government has engaged with the real estate sector to develop and market holiday homes to Italian nationals in Malindi.

Kenya will also lobby for resumption of chartered flights during the 2015 Milan Expo. According to Kandie, the government and industry players have developed new strategies to position Kenya as an ideal tourist destination despite security jitters.

"We shall be holding a series of meetings with airline stakeholders in Italy to lobby for resumption of chartered flights, " she said, adding that the launch of magical Kenya website in Italian language alongside intensive campaigns is on the cards to lure more visitors from the European nation.
