Seoul shares ended higher on Thursday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 9.70 points, or 0.47 percent, to 2,072.86 at the close. Trading volume stood at 392 million shares worth 7 trillion won (6.3 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks ended 0.07 percent higher Thursday on optimism over Japanese economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 14.68 points, from Wednesday at 20,488.19. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 3.90 points, or 0.23 percent, to 1,673.89.

BEIJING -- Chinese shares closed mixed on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.76 percent to finish at 4, 947.1 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index lost 0.21 percent to close at 17, 501.05 points.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.97 percent to end at 3,943.47 points.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.11 percent lower on Thursday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 8.02 points to 7,553.65. The all-share index went up by 8.64 points, or 0.20 percent, to 4,355.00.

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's share prices closed down 2.17 percent on Thursday with the weighted index down 207.89 points at 9,556.52.

Turnover totaled 135.17 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 4.37 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading session.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 105.58 points, or 1. 38 percent to 27,551.89 points on Thursday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 27,094.50 and 27, 854.74. Turnover totaled 195.23 billion HK dollars (about 25.16 billion U.S. dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 568.99 points on Thursday, up 1.09 points, or 0.19 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 113.850 million shares worth 1.950 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (90 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 135 stocks went up, 72 stocks fell down, while 76 stocks remained unchanged.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 84.89 points on Thursday, up 0.93 points, or 1.11 percent, against the previous trading session.

A total of 65.469 million shares worth 770.853 billion Vietnamese dong (35.69 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Thursday, an increase of 11.94 percent in volume and a decrease of 1.78 percent in value against the previous trading session.
