Burundi's Red Cross said on Wednesday that it had recorded at least 21 deaths since the start of protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza's a third term bid which began from April 26.
"We deplore the death of 21 people whose bodies we saw on the ground," Burundi Red Cross spokesman Alexis Manirakiza said, adding that over 500 others had been injured.
On Wednesday, protests continued in the northern parts of the capital, Bujumbura, despite a massive police deployment.
"Today we decided to carry out peaceful protests. It is a change of strategy as we will not engage in any provocative acts," protesters told Xinhua.
The majority of them were opposition supporters and members of civil society groups.
In communes of Bururi, Rutana and Ngozi provinces, protests were also witnessed, local residents said. Endi
