Forty-nine military vessels from 15 NATO member states will begin military exercises in Gdynia, Poland on June 5. The largest number of the vessels - nine - belongs to Polish Navy, which is co-organizing the exercises.
During a conference held on Monday, press officer Captain Przemyslaw Plonecki announced there would be over five thousand soldiers involved in the maritime maneuvers, code-named Baltops.
The main phase of the joint exercises will last from June 5 to 20 and will involve three phases: landside, maritime maneuvers on the Baltic Sea, and the final phase in Kiel, Germany.
Apart from navy vessels, the exercises will include over 40 air vessels, such as American strategic bombers B-52. The maneuvers will involve a landing operation of 700 soldiers on training ground near Ustka.
Baltops military maneuvers were first held in 1972. Poland has taken part in the exercises since 1993 and the maneuvers are a part of the NATO Partnership for Peace program, he added. Endit
