Italian PM vows to continue supporting Afghanistan

Visiting Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi met with Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Monday, assuring that his country would continue to support Afghanistan, a reliable government source said. "Italy is committed to support Afghanistan in training its security forces, equipping them and in the reconstruction field," the source told Xinhua but declined to be identified.

The Italian prime minister also pledged that his government would help renovate Herat airport, besides refurbishing some roads in the western Herat province, the official added.

The Italian prime minister paid an unannounced visit to Afghanistan's western Herat province on Monday and visited his country's troops stationed there.

More than 3,000 Italian forces had served in Afghanistan within the framework of NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan till late Dec. 2014 when the alliance combat mission ended here.

However, there is still a contingent of Italian forces within the framework of NATO-led Resolute Support (RS) which still serving in Afghanistan to help stabilize the militancy-hit country. Endi
