Sales of new cars in Spain rose by 14 percent in May when compared with a year earlier, according to data published on Monday by Spain's automobile industry organizations.
The Association of Car Manufacturers (ANFAC), the Federation of Association of Dealers of the Automotive sector (FACONAUTO) and the Association of Car Dealers (GANVAM) posted a total of 94,030 new cars purchased in May.
According to this data car sales have been rising for 21 consecutive months, while the Plan PIVE 8 played a very important role in May's data, helping sell 4,500 cars a day during the fifth month of the year.
The Plan PIVE 8, which was extended by the government on May 14, consists of giving prospective buyers 1,500 euros (1642 U.S. dollars), half from the state and half from the car dealer, to buy a new and more ecologic car in exchange for a 10-year old car or older.
According to David Barrientos, Director of Communication from ANFAC, in 2015 purchases of cars could surpass the one million unities especially thanks to the Plan PIVE. However, he warns that the market needs to grow more as Spain's fleet, one of the oldest in Europe, still needs to be renewed.
Data also showed a total of 443,919 purchases registered in the first five months of the year, which meant a 21.7 percent increase in comparison with a year earlier.
The number of sales of private cars increased by 6.2 percent in May to 44,745 purchases, while in the first five months of the year sales reached 225,108 purchases meaning a 22.4 percent increase on a year-on-year basis.
Firms bought 24,531 new vehicles in May which meant a 37.7 percent increase when compared with a year earlier, while in the first five months of the year firms purchased 110,952 vehicles, a 31 percent more than a year earlier. Endit
