12 killed as army launches ground operation in NW Pakistan

Twelve militants were killed when Pakistani army launched ground operation in Pakistan's northwest tribal area of North Waziristan on Monday, officials said.

Inter-Services Public Relations, the mouthpiece of Pakistani army, said in a statement that the troops surrounded and killed suspected militants during a search operation in Datta Khel area of the North Waziristan Agency, a restive tribal area along Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Some militants fled the scene, leaving bodies of their accomplices behind.

The statement said that the operation, which was launched last night in the area, continued till morning.

The recent ground offensive is the continuation of Pakistani army's ongoing operation"Zarb-e-Azb"in the area which has so far claimed the lives of over 2,000 militants in various area of North Waziristan.

The operation kicked off in mid-June last year with an aim to remove sanctuaries of local and foreign terrorists and eliminate militancy from the North Waziristan area. Endi
