Libya Dawn militias free all 172 detained Tunisians

Militias of Libya Dawn, who dominate the capital Tripoli, released 172 Tunisian detainees who were arrested last week, Tunisian foreign ministry said on Saturday.

"All Tunisian national who were detained lately have been freed. The final group was released on Saturday," the ministry said in a statement.

Libya Dawn militias arrested 172 Tunisian nationals last week in Tripoli after a senior commander of the militias has been arrested in Tunisia, according to Tunisian officials.

Libya Dawn militias, an alliance of Islamist militants, took over the capital Tripoli in August 2014. They revived the outgoing General National Congress and formed a parallel government to confront the elected one.

Libya suffers a security vacuum since the fall of former ruler Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011. Since then, the country has been plagued with illegal arrests and detentions of foreigner nationals and diplomats by armed factions to pressure the government into complying with their demands. Enditem
