The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on Friday that its efforts in close coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces have ensured a long period of stability in the border region between Lebanon and Israel.

Commander General of the UNIFIL Luciano Portolano made these remarks in a speech on the occasion of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers at its Naqoura headquarters in southern Lebanon.

"UNIFIL is a traditional peacekeeping mission with integrated military and civilian components working with perfect synergy. Our combined efforts in close coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces have ensured a long period of stability," he said.

He expressed deep appreciation to the Lebanese Armed Forces and security organizations, saying "their strategic partnership is key to UNIFIL's success in the implementation of resolution 1701."

Peacekeepers representing the 39 national contingents in UNIFIL joined the event by representatives of the local authorities, Lebanese Armed Forces, Security Forces and members of the international community. High-rank officials from the Lebanese Armed Forces and other members of the Judiciary were also present.

The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is observed globally to honor the memory of the UN peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.

It also aims to pay tribute to all men and women who have served and continue to serve in UN Peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage.

There are now more than 125,000 UN peacekeepers, including 91, 000 military personnel, 13,000 police officers, as well as 17,000 international civilian and national staff serving in 16 operations on four continents. Endit
