Merkel not ruling out EU treaty changes after talks with Cameron

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Friday that she did not rule out future EU treaty changes after meeting visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Cameron in Berlin, Merkel made it clear that Germany wants Britain to stay in the EU.

"Where there's a will, there's a way," the chancellor said with the view of possible EU reforms, adding that Germany would work constructively with the British government about its wishes and expectations in this regard.

Merkel did not rule out EU treaty changes, saying discussions have begun over related content, and some of the reform suggestions could "possibly" also be in Germany's interest.

For his part, Cameron said: "It is right for the UK to stay in a reformed union."

"This is about starting the process," he said about future EU reforms. "Of course it is going to be difficult, but the important thing is to get it under way."

Cameron has made a two-day Europe tour to seek support for his EU reform agenda from other European leaders. Before heading to Berlin for talks with Merkel, he also visited the Netherlands, France and Poland. Endit
