The Secretary of Defense of the United States Ashton Carter will pay an official visit to Vietnam from May 31 to June 2 at the invitation of Vietnamese Minister of Defense Phung Quang Thanh, Le Hai Binh, spokesperson of Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.

"During Carter's visit, the two sides will discuss measures to further enhance defense cooperation between the two countries, and discuss regional and international issues of mutual concerns in order to further enhance bilateral relations and mutual understanding between the two countries and two armies," Binh told reporters at a regular press conference held Thursday in Vietnam's capital Hanoi.

According to the agenda, the U.S. secretary of defense will hold talks with Vietnamese Minister of Defense Phung Quang Thanh, and attend a signing ceremony for the Joint Vision Statement.

Earlier in 2012, then Secretary of Defense of the United States Leon Panetta paid a visit to Vietnam. Endi
