Conmebol disavows corruption and backs FBI's investigation

Xinhua, May 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) stated its disavowal on Wednesday "to any acts of corruption" and "unrestrictedly" supported the initiated investigations by the United States Department of Justice involving themselves, CONCACAF (North America and Caribbean Football Confederation) and FIFA.

"In any circumstance of the trial, of the declaration of guilt or non guilt of the involved persons," CONMEBOL called for respect in a press release published on its website

In that sense, by referring to "alleged irregular acts", it made a compromise to "openly and emphatically collaborate" with these investigations.

It also said "to look after the truth, ethics and transparency of FIFA, CONMEBOL and member associations' activities."

The U.S. Department of Justice published the list of 18 defendants in the FIFA corruption scandal, nine of which are executives.

Involved South Americans are Eugenio Figueredo (Uruguay), Nicolas Leoz (Paraguay; former CONMEBOL President), Jose Maria Marin (Brazil) and Rafael Esquivel (Venezuela). Endi
