UN concerned over displacement, relocation in Sudan's Blue Nile State

Xinhua, May 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

The United Nations on Wednesday expressed deep concern over reports on large-scale displacement, including possible forced relocations in Sudan's Blue Nile State.

"I am very concerned by reports that large-scale displacement, including possible forced relocations, is occurring in Blue Nile State's Bau locality and possibly in other parts of the state," said Geert Cappelaere, United Nations Resident and Acting Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, in a statement Wednesday.

"As conflict has increased in Blue Nile, it continues to be civilians who bear the brunt of this fighting. Humanitarian needs are rapidly rising in Blue Nile, but aid agencies are often not permitted to independently assess humanitarian needs and respond accordingly in the state," he noted.

He further urged all parties to stop fighting immediately and allow aid agencies to get assistance to people in need, wherever they may be located, he said, pointing out that "These people should not have to suffer."

The military clashes have recently escalated in Blue Nile state between the Sudanese army and the fighters of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector.

The Blue Nile state enjoys a strategic geographical location, and is rich of natural resources. It is also home to Al-Rusaires, the biggest electricity producing Dam in Sudan. Endit
