600,000 yuan gone after rivals steal a goal from goalkeeper on water break

Xinhua, May 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Chongqing Lifan cut back on the bonus money and slapped a 50,000 yuan (8,060 U.S. dollars) fine on the goalkeeper who took a water break to let the rival team sneak in a goal in their Super League game on Sunday.

Lifan, who led 1-0 over hosts Liaoning and were on course for their only second victory this season, were stunned in the 83rd minute when Liaoning midfielder Ding Haifeng hit the winner in an unguarded net as goalkeeper Sui Weijie drank from a water bottle by the right post.

Lifan management had promised 1 million yuan bonus for a win since the newly-promoted southwestern club have been struggling in relegation zone.

Instead the team were given 400,000 yuan for a draw and Sui was fined 50,000 yuan for the blunder.

Sources said Sui is facing suspension from next games.

Lifan supporters confronted Sui at Liaoning's Shenyang Airport on Monday when the team flew home.

"I made a terrible mistake in Sunday's game and let go a full three points," said an apologetic Sui. "I won't repeat the same mistake and will never lose concentration." Enditem
