Spain receives 16 mln int'l tourists during first four months

Spain received a total of 16 million international tourists in the first four months of the year, a 4.4 percent increase when compared with the same period of a year earlier, the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism reported on Friday.
Tourists arriving from Britain increased by 5.5 percent to 3.3 million in the first four months of the year in comparison with the same period of a year earlier accounting for 20.5 percent of the total.
They were followed by the French whose number of arrivals reached 2.6 million increasing by 4.7 percent from a year earlier, while arrivals from Germany increased by 0.3 percent to 2.5 million.
The Ministry also reported that the number of tourists arriving from Italy rose by 12.2 percent to 990,444 in the first four months of the year in comparison with the same period of a year earlier, while arrivals from the United States rose by 11.7 percent to 811,884 tourists.
On the other hand the number of tourists arriving from Russia, the Nordic Countries and the Netherlands fell by 28.3 percent, 7.9 percent and 3 percent respectively from January to April on a year-on-year basis.
The northeastern region of Catalonia received the largest number of tourists from January to April with a total of 4.1 million international arrivals, followed by the archipelago of the Canary Islands and the southern region of Andalusia that received 4.04 million and 2.1 million tourists respectively.
Spain is the third most visited country in the world, receiving 64.99 million international tourists in 2014, a figure that expects to surpass in 2015. Endit
