Vietnam calls for UNODC's support in building drug free GMS

Xinhua, May 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Thursday called on the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to continue its support and cooperation with Vietnam and other countries to build a drug free Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).

Dung made the remarks while meeting with heads of delegations of Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and UNODC in Hanoi on Thursday, reported Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA.

Highlighting agreement that countries in the GMS and UNODC have just reached on drug control, Dung said Vietnam always attaches great importance and puts priority on the work of drug prevention and combat.

Vietnam will closely work with the United Nations (UN) and countries in GMS at multi-lateral and bilateral levels to combat and prevent this global threat, said Dung.

Jeremy Douglas, regional representative of UNODC for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, for his part, said at the meeting that the cooperation among countries is strong support for the global commitment of the UN and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in combating crimes and drug.

The UN and UNODC will cooperate with GMS countries to provide necessary support in the fight against trans-national crimes and drug, said the UNODC official. Endi
