LeBron James scored 31 points and J.R. Smith sank eight 3-pointers with 28 points to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 97-89 win over top-seeded Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night in Game One of the Eastern Conference finals.

Smith, who went 8 of 12 from 3-point range, had 28 points and 8 rebounds. LeBron James added 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Tristan Thompson finished with 14, Timofey Mozgov and Kyrie Irving added 10 apiece.

Jeff Teague led Atlanta with 27 points. But DeMarre Carroll, their leading scorer in the playoffs, went down with what appeared to be a left knee injury driving to the basket with 5 minutes left. Al Horford had 16 points and 7 rebounds and Paul Millsap finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Kent Bazemore come off the bench and scored 10.

Cleveland outscored the Hawks 22-4 over the final 5 minutes of the third quarter and the first 2 minutes of the fourth before Atlanta closing it to 87-91 with one minute left, but James got rid of Paul Millsap near the arc and slammed a flying dunk to finish off the Hawks. Endi
