Defence minister officially enters race for Latvian presidency

Xinhua, May 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Defence Minister Raimonds Vejonis was officially nominated a candidate for the Latvian presidency on Thursday, a spokeswoman for his ruling centrist Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) said.

ZZS spokeswoman Dace Karklina indicated that on May 11 the ZZS board and parliament faction unanimously decided to nominate Vejonis for the presidency, citing his extensive political experience and achievements as Latvia's defence minister.

Vejonis has now become the third official candidate to run for the Latvian presidency. The opposition leftist Harmony party has nominated MP Sergejs Dolgopolovs and the opposition centrist Latvian Bloc of Regions has nominated its leader Martins Bondars.

The presidential election in Latvia will take place on June 3, 2015. Endit
