India successfully test-lands fighter jet on expressway near national capital

Xinhua, May 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

India on Thursday for the first time successfully test-landed a fighter jet on an expressway, a high-speed road corridor, on the outskirts of the national capital, sources said.

"The combat aircraft, Mirage 2000, of the Indian Air Force successfully skimmed the Yamuna Expressway, barely 25 kms from the national capital in the morning and landed briefly before taking off again. The test-landing was part of emergency landing drills on national highways," the sources said.

"The aircraft made a practice approach on the highway, coming down to a height of 100 meters before landing off the next approach," the Indian Air Force said in a statement.

The landing clearly demonstrated the Indian Air Force's capability to land fighter jets on highways in case its airbases are damaged during a war, the sources said.

The Indian Air Force has plans to activate more such stretches on highways in future, a spokesperson told the media. Endi
