A mayor of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) was shot and injured Wednesday in western Turkey, private Dogan News Agency reported.

Cuneyt Yildiz, AKP mayor of Gursu district of western Bursa province, along with his guard, came under fire at the building of the municipality, according to the report.

The attacker, reportedly a municipal officer, fled the scene, and the two injured were taken to hospital.

Turkey's parliamentary elections are set to take place on June 7.

As many as 56 million Turkish voters are eligible to cast their ballots to elect 550 lawmakers.

On Tuesday, a sound bomb went off at the election bureau of the AKP in Artuklu province of southeastern Mardin province. No casualties were reported and one suspect was arrested.

Also, on Monday, simultaneous explosions hit two offices of pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in the southern Adana and Mersin provinces of Turkey.

The offices of the pro-Kurdish HDP have been attacked by Turkish nationalists, who oppose the Kurdish peace process, more than 60 times in several provinces.

The HDP and the AKP have been conducting negotiations to end three decades of bloody fighting between Turkish army and Kurdish militants of the outlawed Kurdish Workers Party (PKK). Enditem
