Seongnam FC captain Kim Do-heon's goal from the spot in the dying minute helped his team edge past Guangzhou Evergrande 2-1 at home in the first leg of Round of 16 in AFC Champions League on Wednesday.
Chinese Super League giant Guangzhou Evergrande took advantage from the very beginning as Huang Bowen and Ricardo Goulart kept threatening opponent's goal.
Seongnam should have taken the lead from the 10th minute as Jorginho capitalized Guangzhou defender's error, but the Brazilian striker's shot was refused by keeper Zeng Cheng.
Seongnam scored the opening goal in the 23rd minute when Kim Do-heon made a through pass to the unmarked Jorginho, who finished with a low shot to beat Zeng Cheng.
Guangzhou's reply came four minutes before the half-time. Midfielder Huang Bowen's stunning long shot from 30 yards away levelled the score.
At the beginning of the second half, neither of the two teams had good chances to break the deadlock.
The match came to a turning point as Guangzhou's defender Li Xuepeng saw red for an awful tackle on Ricardo Bueno.
The 10-man Guangzhou started to enhance the defense as team's manager Fabio Cannavaro substituted Yu Han chao by Liu Jian trying to secure the tie.
But Seongnam shattered the Italian's plan as the club from South Korea got a penalty in the stoppage time. Zeng Cheng made the right jugdement of the direction but still could not save the ball, only to see the tie slip away before the final whistle.
The second leg will be held on May 27. An 1-0 win will help Guangzhou book a berth in the last eight. Endi
