Burundi coup plotters to face trial: presidential office

The office of Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza has announced that the plotters of last week's failed coup will face trial in accordance with the law, a senior official said Wednesday.

"Some rumors said there would be reprisals against the family and friends of the suspects in the failed coup plot. This is not true. Only the suspects of the coup plot will face trial according to the Burundian law," presidential spokesman Willy Nyamitwe told Xinhua.

The suspects will be judged in line with the country's penal code, he said.

On May 13, a group of soldiers and policemen said they had overthrown Nkurunziza and his government when the president attended a regional summit in Tanzania.

Eighteen suspects in the failed coup plot, including three army and police generals, have been arrested and heard by the country's Attorney General, while coup leader Godefroid Niyombare, a former intelligence chief, remains at large. Endi
