The Bronx Museum in New York will open an exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts (NMFA) in Havana on May 21 in the lead-up to the 12th Havana Biennial.
The exhibition, called "Wild Noise", includes around 100 works by 54 exponents of contemporary American art.
"This is the largest exchange to date that our museum has done with a foreign institution," said Corina Matamoros, curator of the NMFA.
One of the most important pieces to be exhibited is a meters-long "Afro-American Flag" by David Hammons, which will be placed on the facade of the Universal Art Building.
Apart from the exhibition, the biennial event also includes other cultural activities including educational exchanges and collaboration between teenagers from both cities to publish a magazine.
Holly Bolck, director of the Bronx Museum, said that to exhibit some of the institutions' most appreciated works in Havana is a dream coming true.
As part of the exchanges between the two cultural institutions, the NMFA will bring an exhibition to New York in 2016, which includes Cuban artworks from the 60s, 70s and 80s of the 20th century.
The opening of the Bronx Museum's exhibition will coincide with the new round of talks between Cuba and the United States on resuming and normalizing diplomatic ties, broken since 1961.
More than 200 artists from 40 countries have confirmed their participation in the Havana Biennial, scheduled from May 22 to June 22. Endit
