Formal nomination of presidential candidates begins in Latvia

Xinhua, May 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Political parties started officially nominating their candidates for the Latvian presidency on Tuesday, the local media reported.

Opposition party Latvian Bloc of Regions (LRA) was the first to submit its application to the parliament presidium on Tuesday morning. LRA nominated its leader Martins Bondars for Latvia's next president.

In the afternoon, Latvia's largest opposition party, the left-wing Harmony party, nominated MP Sergejs Dolgopolovs as its presidential candidate.

The official nomination of presidential candidates, which kicked off on Tuesday, will continue until May 24.

Latvia's three ruling parties have apparently failed to agree on a single presidential candidate.

While the centrist Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) and the center-right Unity are likely to nominate Defence Minister Raimonds Vejonis for the presidency, the right-wing National Alliance is sticking with its own candidate, Egils Levits, a judge at the European Court of Justice.

The presidential election in Latvia will take place on June 3, 2015. Endit
