Belgium: 500 prepaid credit cards targeted by fraudsters

Xinhua, May 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 500 prepaid credit cards in Belgium have been hacked by fraudsters, De Standaard reported on Monday.

According to reports, some card users have lost hundreds of euros. In some cases, victims are not aware that their credit card has been misused.

According to the Brussels police, around 500 card users are known to be victims of the fraudsters, who have hacked the prepaid cards of various financial institutions.

Prepaid credit cards are not linked to a current account, but can be topped-up in a similar way to a GSM phone card. They are offered by certain financial institutions, such as Axa and Belfius, as well as the postal service, Bpost. They can be purchased anonymously, and payments can be made without the user revealing their identity. Endit
