Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100GMT, May 18

Tokyo stocks rose 0.80 percent to a three-week high Monday amid falling global government bond yields and Japanese companies' strong earnings.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 157.35 points, from Friday at 19,890.27. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 19.55 points, or 1.22 percent, higher at 1,626.66.

The turnover was 2,632.67 billion yen (about 22.01 billion U.S. dollars).

BEIJING -- Chinese shares ended lower on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.58 percent, or 25.20 points, to finish at 4,283.49 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index lost 0.15 percent, or 22.32 points, to close at 14,672.63 points.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, soared 4.23 percent, or 133.15 points, to end at 3,278.48 points.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks dropped 231.03 points, or 0.83 percent, to close on Monday at 27,591.25 points.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 27,792.44 and 27, 435.57. Turnover totaled 122.99 billion HK dollars (15.9 billion U. S. dollars).

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher on Monday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 7. 22 points, or 0.34 percent, to 2,113.72 at the close.

Trading volume stood at 441.45 million shares worth 5.78 trillion won (5.32 billion U.S. dollars).

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market finished on Monday down 0.55 percent against the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index decreased by 7.90 points to 1,435.70. A total of 29,977 shares worth about 221 million Lao kip (about 27,000 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.36 percent higher on Monday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 28. 48 points to 7910.43. The all-share index went up by 13.88 points, or 0.31 percent, to 4560.01.

Trading volume reached 600.44 million shares worth 4.52 billion pesos ( 101.55 million U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed lower Monday with the weighted index down 26.62 points, or 0.27 percent, to close at 9, 606.1, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 91.52 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 3.01 billion U.S. dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 528.95 points on Monday, down 8.49 points, or 1.58 percent, against last Friday' s closing session.

About 105.370 million shares worth 1.552 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (71.63 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange.

VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse, which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 552.9 points, down 8.97 points, or 1.6 percent.

A total of 49.470 million shares worth 900.69 billion VND (41. 55 million U.S. dollars) were traded on Monday.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital, HNX-Index, closed at 76.51 points on Monday, down 1.7 points or 2.17 percent against the previous closing session.

A total of 42.016 million shares worth 422.323 billion Vietnamese dong (19.55 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Monday, an increase of 10.74 percent in volume and 0.66 percent in value against the previous closing session.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Monday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,823.50, up 11. 58 points or 0.64 percent, and the Emas was at 12,573.72, up 77.77 points or 0.62 percent.

Turnover declined to 2.20 billion shares valued at 1.78 billion ringgit Malaysia (498.53 million U.S. dollars), compared with 1.75 billion shares valued at 1.84 billion ringgit Malaysia (515.98 million U.S. dollars) last Friday.

---- SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished lower on Monday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 3.53 points, or 0.10 percent, to close at 3,459.57.

A total of 1.74 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 961.4 million Singapore dollars (730 million U.S. dollars).

---- JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed higher by 10.71 points, or 0. 20 percent, to a level of 5,237.81 on Monday.

Some 192,055 transactions were booked, involving 5.73 billion shares worth 5.29 trillion rupiah (about 403.55 million U.S. dollars).

MUMBAI -- Indian stocks soared by over 360 points Monday amid optimism that the central bank could relax rates in coming weeks.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark index Sensex closed at 27,687.30 points, 363.30 or 1.33 percent up from the previous close of 27,324 points.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed Monday at 4,407.43 points, up 91.43 points or about 2.12 percent from Sunday's finish.

Total turnover increased to about 7.54 billion taka (about 96. 66 million U.S. dollars) on Monday from about 7.11 billion taka ( about 91.10 million U.S. dollars) on Sunday.

---- BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Monday moved down 1.78 points, or 0.12 percent to close at 1,510.41 points.
