Burundi's president calls for citizens' contribution to elections

Xinhua, May 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza Friday evening called for citizens' contribution to the forthcoming elections and warned against troublemakers.

Nkurunziza urged the finance ministry to make calculations and organize how contributions will be made.

"I call on the international community to continue supporting Burundi, especially during the forthcoming elections. If they (international community) do not help us, chaos will be given an opportunity," said Nkurunziza.

Some international partners including Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands have announced suspension of the aid to the country's elections due between May 26 and August 24, stressing that the third term bid of President Nkurunziza is a violation of the country's constitution and the 2000 Arusha Agreement.

In a political dialogue held last week, the European Union, the United States and Switzerland urged the postponement of the country's general elections, arguing that the ongoing protests against Nkurunziza's third term could not allow a good organization of the first polls due on May 26. Endi
