U.S. stocks open higher amid data releases

Xinhua, May 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

U.S. stocks opened higher on Friday following a record market close on Thursday.

U.S. stocks ended sharply higher Thursday, with all the three major indices rising over 1 percent, as mixed economic data suggested that the Federal Reserve may delay interest rate hikes despite a solid labor market.

On economic front, industrial production decreased 0.3 percent in April for its fifth consecutive monthly loss, missing market expectations. Manufacturing output was unchanged in April after recording an upwardly revised gain of 0.3 percent in March.

Empire Manufacturing data showed a reading of 3.09, below expectations but above last month's negative figure.@ The University of Michigan' s consumer sentiment report is due later Friday morning.

The U.S. dollar continued to trade near lows on Friday. The greenback held near its lowest level since January against a currency basket Thursday.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked up 9.87 points, or 0.05 percent, to 18,262.11. The S&P 500 edged up 0.44 points, or 0.02 percent, to 2,121.54. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 5.02 points, or 0.10 percent, to 5,055.81. Endi
