Namibia ward off Hong Kong assault to grab first intercontinental victory

Xinhua, May 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Namibian cricket team managed to contain an assault from Hong Kong batsmen, Haseeb Amjab and Eshan Nawazb, during their first encounter at this year's International Cricket Council's (ICC) Intercontinental Cup in namibia's capital Windhoek on Wednesday.

The Namibian team kept Hong Kong at bay and denied them the opportunity of scoring 303 runs. The Namibia bowling department had a mammoth task on their hands as they had to take 10 wickets to win considering that one of their experienced bowlers, Tiaan Snyman tore his ankle ligaments on the previous day.

Hong Kong got off to a very good start, and were 48/0, before Namibia's young and talented Christopher Coombe made a breakthrough. Shortly after Coombe took another wicket, Bernhard Scholtz stepped into action with two more quick wickets.

The Hong Kong wickets started to fall like domino's at regular intervals, as Scholtz grabbed a wicket while Burger snatched up two and JJ Smit getting one.

With eight wickets down by tea time, Hong Kong had only 139 runs and Namibia seemed to have the match in the bag. However a sterling performance from the Asian duo of Haseeb Amjab and Eshan Nawaz meant headaches for Namibia's bowling department.

Namibian captain Nikolaas Scholtz took things into his own hands and managed to handle the problematic Asian duo as he took two wickets from his first two balls, leading Namibia to victory.

Meanwhile on Friday 15 May the two teams will square off in the first 50 over match of the World Cricket league. Endite
