France provides funding for Burkina Faso's electoral process

Xinhua, May 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

A week after agreeing to offer Burkina Faso close to 2 billion CFA Francs (3.3 million U.S. dollars) to support the organization of Oct. 11 elections, on Wednesday France disbursed a sum of 540,000 dollars to the country's electoral commission.

The French Embassy in Burkina Faso said the money was part of France's financial commitment towards supporting the organization of the said elections.

"The money will enable the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) to supervise the conduct of the polls as well as electronically deliver the results to facilitate their announcement within the stipulated time frame," Charge d'Affairs at the French Embassy in Ouagadougou, Veronique Dan, said.

CENI president Me Barthelemy Kere said the contribution which will help to reduce the budget from 20 billion CFA Francs to 18 billion CFA Francs, will equally enable his institution accelerate transmission of results for timely announcement.

The October elections are expected to restore constitutional order in Burkina Faso after the fall of Blaise Compaore's regime in October 2014. Endi
