Cote d'Ivoire soldier killed in attack by armed men

Xinhua, May 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

An officer of the Cote d'Ivoire Republican Force (FRCI) was on Wednesday killed in the country's northern region of Kong in an attack perpetrated by armed men, eyewitnesses told Xinhua.

The residents of the area said an exchange of fire was witnessed between soldiers on patrol and heavily armed men who laid an ambush along Kong-Nafana road.

By the end of the deadly gun fight between the two sides, one of the officers was pronounced dead and the armed men disappeared into the nearby forest.

Cote d'Ivoire is progressively trying to overcome the post- election crisis witnessed in the country between 2010-2011.

The proliferation and illicit movement of weapons that began after the crisis, has resulted into a phenomenon of armed gangs who do not hesitate to attack official, civilian and military convoys.

Due to the persistence of the phenomenon, the Cote d'Ivoire army has reinforced deployments in the country's interior regions and redoubled its vigilance. Endi
